The series very quickly introduced the concept of tournaments, motivating Goku as early as the second story.
Up until the Z-era, every other arc in Dragon Ball was a tournament arc. Jackie Chun ends up besting both of his students, but it proves to be a difficult fight.
A warrior continues fighting until they lose and the last team standing wins. It only takes three opponents for Goku to have to step in the ring, but he holds his position firm until the very end.
Three years pass and the Dragon Team reunite stronger than ever, resulting in the one tournament in the series where it genuinely seems as though anyone can win— at least until the semi-finals. After spending three years training with God, Goku enters the 23rd Tenkaichi Budokai more determined than ever. Which is exactly what Goku does.
In what was the longest fight in Dragon Ball at the time of its publication, Goku and Piccolo go to war in a stellar showdown that pushes both warriors to their absolute limits. The Cell Games is notable for being the first tournament that Goku outright forfeits.
Unfortunately, Goku fails to inform Gohan of this so it takes some time for him to see the desired effects of training his son. It does ultimately pay off, however, as Gohan is ificantly stronger than either Goku or Cell. Even after taking a Ki attack head on one that would have killed Vegeta, Super Saiyan 2 Gohan is still strong enough to finish Cell off with a one-handed Kamehameha.
The Afterlife Tournament is notable for featuring Pikkon and Super Saiyan Kaioken, along with a double disqualification. After a brief respite due to lack of interest, the Tenkaichi Budokai is revived with Mr. Satan crowned champion of the 24th. This change also brought with it the introduction of the junior division, which Videl won.
The 25th Tenkaichi Budokai as the tournament interrupted in the Buu arc— which 18 throws for Satan— and the 26th, 27th, and 28th Tenkaichi Budokai are all tournaments which play out off-screen. As the first tournament arc in Dragon Ball Superthe Universe 6 Tournament plays out like a soft return to form for the series. By Renan Fontes Published Sep 30, Share Share Tweet 0.
